There are some rare books so beautiful, that to bring them back to life for the enjoyment of new generations seems more important than ever.  One such title is the artist  William Henry Walker’s illustrated version of  Lewis  Carroll's Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the most elusive and decorative of all early 20th-century editions. 

Even in 1907, the elaborately decorated gilded cloth cover was so expensive to produce, that it was abandoned half way through its print run and replaced with a simpler design. This means that only approximately 500 were ever issued with full colour and gilt blocking and even fewer survive.

We are lucky enough to own one, which took us years to find. After putting it on display, it soon became the most frequently requested book in the shop. In response to countless such requests, we decided to create an edition that would faithfully convey the astonishing allure of the original.

Following 18 months of dedicated proofing, hand-tracing and colour matching, we are proud to announce the launch of our own edition, created  from the 1907 first issue. The striking W.H. Walker front cover depicts the famous court scene.The White Rabbit appears as the King’s Herald beneath a rose-edged banner, holding a gold trumpet in one hand and a scroll in the other.  Playing Card men stand guard in the foreground with plumed hats, scarlet boots and crimson hearts. On the spine we find a magpie perched above the title and below him two dolphins outlined in white. All of these elements are set off beautifully by the greyish-blue tones of the background colour. The book also contains 8 colour and 42 black and white illustrations throughout. 

 A limited edition of 100 copies only will be available exclusively from Alice Through The Looking Glass. Made and printed entirely in the United Kingdom from sustainable materials. Hand sewn rather than glued. All page edges are gilded, with each of the 100 copies numbered and embossed by hand.
