Through a Looking Glass Darkly. Limited Edition by Jake Fior.
Through a Looking Glass Darkly is a deeply layered hypnotic journey to the dark side of Carroll’s original text. If Through the Looking Glass is Carroll’s mirror image of Wonderland, then this is the mirror crack’d.
Here we encounter Alice not as a Victorian schoolgirl but a confident yet conflicted teenager immersed in a landscape of impending danger and bewildering beauty.
This reimagining contains examples of real ritual magic and is complemented through the use of references to actual moments in the history of secret magical society The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the battle to save it from the malign influence of a young Aleister Crowley.
The final chapter charts the extraordinary history of this book. The very process of its creation seems to have invoked the discovery of major lost historical objects and a relationship between Carroll’s original text and the arcane teachings of Western Mysticism.
The book’s illustrations are not exact reproductions of Tenniel’s work but a set of partially redrawn and fantastically coloured images. Through a Looking Glass Darkly contains unpublished and previously unseen work by John Tenniel, not only the original illustrator of Alice, but one of the most important illustrators of all time.
Kate Hepburn has coloured many of the images within Through a Looking Glass Darkly. Kate worked extensively with Terry Gilliam on the Monty Python animated sequences and books. She has also worked closely with Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones tour graphics.
Bound in a fine woven midnight blue silk cloth with top edge hand decorated in silver by top English book bindery Shepherd’s of London.
All limited edition copies of the book will be accompanied by this exclusive print. The numbering of each print corresponds to the number of the book. Produced at Jealous Print Studio, Shoreditch, London.
Working with Roja Dove, one of the world’s most prestigious perfumers, the books pages are exclusively scented on the pages where Alice enters a curious apothecary shop.
